Obituaries - "May they rest in pieces"

We find that we are drawn into this perilous hobby for various reasons.  Most of us  love to fly.  Some love to build.  Many of us do it for the excitement, thrills, and the accompanying adrenaline rush.  Some of us like the competitive environment, and the comradeship that goes with it. Certainly almost all of us are driven by an unquenchable fascination for flight.  Many of us do it because it is challenging. Very challenging, as far as hobbies go.  Hours and hours, months, even years of careful work can be ruined in the blink of an eye, usually when you least suspect it could happen.
Just as fisherman have always been at the mercy of the sea, we aeromodelers are also at the mercy of nature.  The wind, the trees, the sun, clouds, the laws of physics, our own dumb luck, and most of all the ever present forces gravity, drag and entropy conspire to bring our beautiful creations back to earth without our consent and smash them into unrecognizable pieces.  We call this process "re-kitting".  We have accepted that it is a fact of life, and that it is only within our meager power to postpone this inevitable destiny.
It was established early on that there are really only two kinds of airplanes in this world; those that have crashed, and those that are going to crash.  So therefore, it stands to reason if you can't afford to crash it, don't build it.
Everyone who starts this hobby learns of these truths quickly - almost always  the hard way.  All of us have walked away discouraged at some point.  Many of us never come back.  But some of us do.  Again and again.  This page is dedicated to those individuals. Those who come back from their disappointing failures, only to push themselves back higher and higher, never giving up on their journey of discovery, and their quest for flight.

Crash Gordon

Yellow Sig Wonder (#13) flown by Crash Gordon made a hole in the ground on 9/5/98.  Serious (but fixable) damage to airframe.  Motor, pipe & radio seem to be OK.  Complete details and pictures in the morgue.  Posted 9/5/98

Ducted fan A-4 in Blue Angels colors flown by Dave is no longer with us.  Dave apparently ran out of runway, hit the grass at about 25-30 mph and tumbled.  Engine, pipe, radio and gear survived, but plane was totaled.  May it Rest in Pieces. Posted 9/5/98
