Civil Resistance from Eugene, Oregon |
WE ARE HERE TODAY
To strongly oppose the continuing armed occupation of Iraq
And the suffering we have inflicted upon the Iraqi people.THE IMAGES YOU SEE ON OUR POSTERS
Are some of the many, many casualties of this war caused by us,
Both Iraqi and American,
Civilians and combatants.WE MOURN THE ENORMOUS SUFFERING
CAUSED BY THIS BRUTAL WARWE ARE OUTRAGED
That our government launched this massive brutality on false justifications.WE WISH TO ASSURE
That potential recruits considering military service are fully informed
of the physical, psychological and spiritual risks
and the true reasons why these risks and potentially terrible sacrifices are asked of them
by their government leaders who never personally faced war.WE ENCOURAGE THEM TO SEARCH THEIR HEARTS
And ask the questions...
“Am I willing to kill other human beings in order to dominate another society?”
“Does my country have the right to invade, occupy, and kill tens of thousands
of the citizens of another country innocent of any harm to us?”
“Do I owe loyalty to leaders who misrepresented evidence and misled
their citizens into waging a reckless, enormously costly, deadly and dead-end war?”
“Do I owe loyalty to leaders who have violated international law...”- by unprovoked invasion of another country
- by denying prisoners the right to counsel, trial, or confrontation of witnesses
- by allowing or encouraging torture and humiliation of prisoners
- by use of nuclear (depleted uranium) weapons
- by use of prohibited white phosphorous explosives
- by use of prohibited napalm (MK77) explosives
- by reckless disregard of civilians, including use of cluster bombs in urban areas
- by reckless or deliberate targeting of unembedded pressWe define ourselves by what we do. We must each ask ourselves,
“Who am I,” and “who do I choose to become?”AND WHO ARE WE?
We are individuals acting from conscience and our strong sense of duty as citizens to stop this tragedy through non-violent actions in the tradition of Mahatma Ghandi and Martin Luther King. We believe that the American conscience, once aroused by recognition of the truth, will not allow this foolish, reckless, unjust and violent tragedy to continue.
