MEMORIAL DAY—DAY OF MOURNING FOR THE DEAD ON BOTH SIDES OF THE IRAQ WAR AND A CALL FOR PEACE
Eugene: A group of ordinary citizens from Eugene-Springfield, have organized a unique commemoration this Memorial Day, in mourning for both the American troops and the people of Iraq who have died in the current war.
There will be three aspects of this observance:
1) Stretching for approximately ¾ of a mile in either direction from the Lane County Veteran’s Memorial marble structure on the river bike path at Skinner’s Butte Park, there will be posted an American flag every 5 feet with the name of an American service member lost in the war.
2) At the Veteran’s Memorial, retired minister and WWII veteran Edgar Peara will deliver a ten minute non-denominational service, each hour beginning at 9 am.
3) In the courtyard behind the Campbell Senior Center, approximately ¼ mile east of the War Memorial, will be a photo display of the injured from this war, both American and Iraqis, called “Shared Images of Grief, A War Images Gallery.” Parents will be warned that discretion is advised for children at this display.
We are ordinary citizens who are veterans, business owners, seniors, students, professional people, young children, and parents. The group is not named. It is open to all concerned individuals.
Also on Memorial Day, Progressive Responses of CALC, will be hosting a peace vigil at the Eugene Federal building from 4-5:30 pm, calling for the country to re-capture its moral center. At 4:30 pm, there will be music, a few speakers, and an open mike for people to express their vision for a peaceful world.
The vigil is part of a month-long vigil and fast for world healing. Daily vigils take place noon to 1:00 pm at the Federal Building, and except for Memorial day, 4 to 5:30 pm at the Eugene Public Library. The action will conclude with a ceremony on Saturday, June 11, 1:30 pm, at the Federal Building.
