1LT Ehren Watada speaks

Ehren is the highest ranking officer so far to refuse to fight the illegal war in Iraq. By refusing gracefully and "by the book" to carry out illegal orders, Ehren has effectively put the Iraq war itself on trial!
These video clips below explain the story well and are from a DVD produced by Pepperspray Productions. Please consider buying the contiguous and higher-resolution DVD with extras not shown here for $12 plus shipping, more information on how from http://www.PeppersprayProductions.org
Proceeds from the sale of this DVD go to the Watada Defense Fund.
For those that don't have time to watch the whole video in four parts, here is a brief text summary from the Lt. Watada Support Committe in Eugene/Springfield, please feel free to use it for your local publicity and educational efforts:

Lt. Ehren Watada was tried once.  It wasn't going well for the government's position so the judge declared a mistrial.
Now they’re violating the U.S. Constitution by ignoring double jeopardy and trying him again.

June, 2006:  Lt. Ehren Watada refuses deployment to Iraq, honoring his officer's oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution and military law by refusing an illegal order as required by the Nuremberg Principle within the Uniform Code of Military Justice. How was the order to deploy illegal?  Lt. Watada had done his homework.  Article VI of the Constitution declares our treaty obligations “the Supreme Law of the Land,” and we are signatories to the United Nations Charter which prohibits aggressive war.

Watada had conferred with his commanding officer on the legality of making speeches criticizing U.S. leadership and was told that he must be off base, out of uniform and on his own time.  He complies with each restriction when he speaks at the Veterans for Peace Conference.  Yet, the military charges him with “conduct unbecoming an officer” in addition to missing a troop movement.

February 5, 2007:  The Court Martial begins against Lt. Watada.  Judge Head denies ALL expert witnesses for the defense!  All were ready to testify that the Iraq war is illegal.  The prosecution presents their witnesses and its best case.  Under cross examination prosecution witnesses give testimony which supports Watada.  Judge Head then makes an unprecedented move prompting prosecutors to call for a mistrial -- which he grants over defense objections -- and calls for a retrial.  Lt. Ehren Watada is being subjected to double jeopardy -- being tried twice for the same alleged offense -- a violation of Constitutional protections against governmental abuse of power.

Lt. Watada has committed no crime.  He pledged to uphold the constitution, and did so by refusing an unlawful order to fight an illegal war.  The government must uphold the Constitution and not try him a second time. A second court martial is scheduled for October 9, 2007, at Ft. Lewis.  Please support  Lt. Watada with letters to the editor, blog entries, videos, talk to your neighbors.
